NEW YORK — It’s not clear why the FBI is investigating the death of a police officer in New York City, but the city is now dealing with a major spike in homicides in the city’s most populous borough.
In the last year, there have been more than 700 homicides in Brooklyn alone.
The New York Police Department reported the deaths of eight officers, including one in the same week they were patrolling a residential neighborhood in the Lower East Side neighborhood where the police officer was shot and killed.
On Monday, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office charged the officer’s killer, an 18-year-old African American who has not been identified.
In Brooklyn, there are at least seven homicides in a week, a record number.
The city has recorded a total of more than 5,400 murders in the first six months of this year, more than double the number of killings in the entire year of 2010.
The department says it’s investigating all homicides.
The deaths come as the city grapples with the nation’s worst police-involved shooting death in recent years.
Police in Brooklyn are now on high alert, and the police commissioner is asking for increased funding to help with the investigation.
“If there is a need for more officers, we are working very hard to ensure that,” Brooklyn Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said at a news conference Monday.
“But we are not there yet.
And that’s because we have to understand this as a crime-ridden community.”
In Brooklyn’s Lower East Ward, one of the citys most crime-plagued neighborhoods, the NYPD says it has had two officers killed in the past two weeks.
“There is a spike, and there will be a spike,” NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill said.
“We’re not going to be able to ignore it.
We’re going to have to do something.”
O’Neil said the department is also working with the FBI and local prosecutors to bring charges in at least six cases, including the fatal shooting of a man who was in a car with another person.
O’Neal said he has been informed of four additional shootings in the borough this week.
Police say at least one of those people is still hospitalized in stable condition, but O’Brien says it is too soon to say whether he was shot while fleeing police or when he was in the car.
“It could be the car was stolen, it could be someone got out of the car and shot him,” he said.
In a statement, Bratton urged residents to be vigilant and keep their doors locked and doors locked at night.
“In Brooklyn, the police are not the only ones out there.
There are other groups of people out there committing crimes,” Bratton wrote.
“These crimes are not limited to a few bad apples.
These crimes are systemic.
And the perpetrators will continue to prey on people who are vulnerable and vulnerable in Brooklyn.”
The NYPD has also reported several high-profile homicides, including a 20-year old black man shot dead in the Bronx last week.
The man’s father said he thought the police were responding to a domestic dispute and was shot as he ran away.
Police said the officer was wearing a body camera and was attempting to flee.
The NYPD also said it had arrested several men in the last month for a series of alleged sexual assaults in the neighborhood.
In New York’s most heavily policed city, the city has a population of more that 7.7 million people.
Police have not yet released details on any of the deaths or the arrests.
In Manhattan, a 20 year old black woman was shot in the leg in the Crown Heights neighborhood on Monday.
Police identified the suspect as a 25-year older black man, who is currently in custody.
“He is a repeat offender who is a violent felon,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said.
Police are also investigating the shooting death of another young black woman in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant on Sunday.
The woman, who has yet to be identified, was walking her dog when a man approached and shot her in the chest.
The suspect fled the scene and is described as a white male in his 20s.
The victim was rushed to a hospital, where she died.
The Brooklyn district attorney’s office also has charged a man in connection with a string of attacks on women on the Upper East Side.
He faces charges including kidnapping and robbery.
“I think it’s a lot of attention being paid to these killings, but it’s also a lot about a culture that’s permeating in the community,” said Brooklyn Councilwoman Hakeem Jeffries, who represents the Upper West Side.
“And if you look at the numbers, it’s very clear that there’s a culture of racism that permeates that community.”
