Georgetown News has named a comic strip about a woman being uncomfortable and feeling a little nervous about what she’s about to do in public as one of the finalists for the inaugural Georgetown News Award.
The title of the 2016 edition of the Georgetown News Awards, announced Thursday, is “A Woman in Public.”
The award honors work of artists and writers whose work engages with public issues and themes, while providing a fun and uplifting reading experience for readers.
The competition features more than 100 comics from the best graphic novel writers and artists in the country.
“The most exciting thing about the inaugural edition of this award is the way that we’re inviting our readers to contribute,” said David Furlong, president and chief executive officer of Georgetown University.
“This year’s judges, writers and art directors are all women, and we wanted to take the opportunity to acknowledge the important contributions that women have made to our communities and to our country.”
The selection was based on the finalists’ writing, graphic design, color and story, and their graphic novels, and was based largely on the work of three graphic novelists, the 2016 winner, Taryn Scott, said in a statement.
Scott, who won the inaugural award for her work on the short-lived web series “A-Z,” and whose new novel “A Night at the Museum: The Life and Death of James S.A. Watson” is in the Top Ten on the New York Times bestseller list, is the only female winner.
The award was launched in 2013.
Scott is also the winner of the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Graphic Reporting, the 2013 Pulitzer Prize in Journalism and the 2015 National Book Award.
She said the selection is an honor and honor to be considered for the award.
“My writing and my art are both about women, women of color, women in LGBTQ communities,” Scott said.
“I think it’s an honor to have this recognition and to be selected for this award.”
The finalists will receive a $1,000 cash prize and will be announced Nov. 12.
The winner will be selected from the following finalists: TarynScott, T.H.O.S.H., S.T.O., M.D.T., Silly, The Book of the Week, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and more.
